In A Bad Starbucks (Blogophilia 5.7)

Barista faces me
La belle fille sans merci
Greasy hair tucked sloppily
In a standard issue green cap
Slappable face sneers out
"What will you have?"

It could be any
Of the cloned places
Providing Pizza, or chicken,
Or sandwiches.
A very small cog
Trying to control
The human seasons.

Just a drop
Of the Java Jive
To kill an hour
Before a meeting

Leather chairs by the door
Invite me to stop
Three chord blues
Piped in from the corporate office
Settle fragile nerves

That meeting can wait.

  1. A very tidy write. All the important stuff is there.
    why a "slappable" face though?

    1. I got that from an encounter with a teenage girl and her mother at a local supermarket. The girl had that look. All you wanted to do was slap the smirk right off. And then it occurred to me how many customer facing worker drones have that look.

  2. Hahahaha! In the barista defense (yes I work in the service industry too), I'm sure he's overworked and underpaid which accounts for his haggard appearance.

    1. And the last thing he wants to see is another harried customer.

    1. I usually just get regular brew. The leather chairs are what I really want.

  4. Haha, drones is right. For some reason I picture mindless small talk peppered in there :P Maybe before or after the meeting ~

  5. Worker bees only there to work, not paid enough to provide positive human experiences.

  6. "That meeting can wait" A closing statement if ever there was one!

  8. You've painted the picture quite well.... and woven in the emotions....feeling the hopelessness of the situation. Another day, another dollar, putting the nose to the grindstone, wishing you were not there. Wicked good closing line, too!

    1. Yep. And the snarky attitude from behind the counter doesn't help.

  9. Nobody wants to be where they are in that moment - it comes across clear as day. Nice write! :)
