The Sandman's Miniature Stage (Blogophilia 18.17)

Image
The old house creaked like a ship struggling against a rogue wave. Outside, the storm was an orchestral menace—rain hammered the roof in frantic bursts, and the wind howled through the narrow chimney flue, sounding less like air and more like a human sob. In the living room, Eliza huddled closer to the dying fire, but the warmth felt thin and temporary. Her gaze kept drifting to the dark, intricate doll house that dominated the corner of the room. It wasn't merely a toy; it was a museum piece, a perfect, miniature replica of the very house she sat in, built over a century ago. Tonight, with every lightning flash, she could swear the tiny windows of the dollhouse reflected the exterior storm with unsettling realism—the miniature curtains seemed to flutter in the nonexistent draft. The clock struck midnight. Simultaneously, a jarring noise cut through the relentless drumming of the rain. It wasn’t a thunderclap, but something mechanical and distorted, like music played through a br...

Stumbling In (Blogophilia 14.17)

Ha. I made it home. And I didn't trip up the stairs. Damn, it was a great party. Lots of booze, weed, and girls dressed as witches. I think one of them slapped me, but I'm not sure. Should I have slept it off up there? Well, yeah. But the girl's roommate said I had to go, so I did. Oh, I could have crashed in the car, but security came and said they were calling the cops. I did kill a little time at Dunkin, but coffee only goes so far. I was still seeing double when I left. The drive home was a blur. Who was that dude I picked up?  The question is not what you look at, but what you see. Doesn't matter. I wasn't too big a danger to him anywho. Three locks...I'll take door number two. Congratulations! You have won entrance to your own dumpy apartment! I throw the jacket toward the hook, but it crumples over the cat. It took a minute, but his black form struggled out "Meow." "Ev'nin...What do you want?" I eat a few Pumpkin Spice Batons scat...

Graveyard Everlasting (Blogophilia 35.10)

In an old cemetery on the outskirts of town, a buried couple is resting contently. From time to time, their conversation is heard through the light breeze. “A lovely night, Mary.” The man had a low nasally voice. “Air crisp with the coming cold. Look at the magical colors in the leaves. And the moon, when have we seen it so full?” A birdlike voice replied. “It’s beautiful, Liam, so full and illuminating. Almost like our first night together, remember?” A small chuckle. “Halloween and you were dressed as a the good witch, all in white.” “And you were the Vampire, ready to bleed me blue .” She turned toward her husband. “You asked for my hand and I gave you my heart. Mmm...such a wonderful night.” They gazed contently over the field. Liam turned to his mate. “Mary, may I say I've never wanted another woman?” “You are still so sweet.” She paused, “I certainly never needed another man. Even old, you were clever and reliable. I'm so thankful we ...

The Flying Dutchman (Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers #35)

Yellow freighter came aside the President Street dock just before dawn. A shore crew took the bow lanyard, securing it to dock and quickly followed that with the stern. Stevedores prepped the cranes to begin the offlload when the Chief realized something was amiss. No Captain or Crew, just stacks of cargo containers piled high over the gunnels and a small flat screened kiosk at the top of the gangway. Without a touch, the screen lit up and scrolled the following message: "I am De Vilengende Hollander, the latest in Cargo ships. Instead of a boat with no port, I am a boat with no crew. Swap my cargo so I may proceed." The galley cranes followed the command and killed the crew. Another port taken over. https://flashfictionforaspiringwriters.wordpress.com/
