Le Bad Cinema (Blogophilia 49.9)

I have to admit it. I like bad movies. I mean REALLY bad movies. The kind they show on Elvira and Mystery Science Theater 3000. Movies with plots so ridiculous and with cheesy, bad effects you can only laugh out loud at their absurdity.    I was cruising around YouTube looking at clips about living off the grid and in converted vans when a movie came up: I clicked on it, thinking it was the normal 1 to 5 minute clip, and realized it was a full 100 minute movie. I didn’t have anything better to do, so, I watched.   A quick synopsis: a ship (looking suspiciously like the SS Enterprise) with a crew of three scantily clad, incompetent women is lost in space and chooses to land for repairs in a remote corner of an English park. The landing is witnessed by an uptight Couple (Oliver and Prudence), a Swinging Single (Cliff) and a Wimpy Nerd (Willy), who go to investigate. They are lured on board and the fun and games begin.   The movie is from 1979 and...

The Big Chill (GBE 68)

In 1981, I met a girl.  Her name was Julia and she became my friend and partner in crime.  We dated off and on for several years and ultimately parted. But during our first summer together I experienced one of the stranger cases of Deja Vu ever. Julia was a Biology major and she had received an internship at the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography in Savannah, GA.  During this time, I was working in Atlanta and didn't have many weekends available.  Finally, I had a family wedding to go in Beaufort, SC, which is about 45 miles away from where she was.  I managed to convince my boss I needed to go and to save money I decided to camp at nearby State Park. I ended up being joined on the trip by a couple of friends, Mike and Karl.  They really weren't much of a bother (except for when Mike almost caught my tent on fire).  The car trip had a couple of kinks in it, but we made it OK and we picked my lady up. We spent that night hitting the clubs in Savanna...

Harry in London (Blogophilia 23.5)

Hey, Hidey and Howdy.  It’s Harry Handy, your randy dandy dead DJ reporting to you from the London Olympics.  Yes, Oldies fans, WOFT has deigned to send yours truly to haunt the ceremonies.  And weren’t those ceremonies haunting?  A thousand years of British history distilled into a three and half days…I mean hours...(it just seemed like days). I understand the American commentary left a bit to be desired.  They could have just hired me.  Now for you colonoscopy denizens, I have been dredging around the music crypt to find stuff that fits.  Since this is the Olympics, I was going to use Theme from Chariots of Fire , but I was beaten to the punch by Rowan Atkinson, the Cad.  He really should be run over by that three wheel car you know.   But I did find something that would fit for the swimming competition. Yeah, night swimming is a lot of fun.  When I was a much younger, good looking guy, I used to throw moon ...
