Sleepover (WWG 1.27)

The squeal made Kathy wince.  She had just put Charlie to bed and she hoped the girls didn't wake him up. Kathy checked her watch. 9:30. Yeah, it was time to bring the show to a close. Charlie was sound asleep, oblivious to the noise in the next room. Good.  Sticking her head into Emily's room, she saw Maddie trying to braid her hair while looking at the small screen in Emily's hand. The friendship bracelet they made earlier kept getting tangled in the lace of her nightgown and she was getting frustrated.  Kathy peeked over her shoulder. The image was of a girl about their age giving beauty tips. Some things don't change. She could remember being with Becky and Sarah flipping through magazines and trying to figure out how to tame her curls into something.  "OK, Girls." She said. "Light's out. Let me have the phone." "Oh, Mom!" Emily whined. "We aren't going to look. We promise." "Right.", Kathy smiled. "I wa...

Backyard Sky (Blogophilia 39.10)

Camping on a starlit night in the back yard for her birthday was Daddy's idea. Emily and her best friend Maddie were sleeping in a tent Emily's mom helped put up. And it wasn't one of those Disney Princess tents, either. They were for babies. This tent was the one Daddy used when they went camping out in the woods. Emily loved when they did. She and Daddy would look at sticks and bugs and stuff. But Mommy would get cold and complain, then they would pack up and go home. Kind of like what Maddie was doing now. "When is your mom coming out with the choc'lit. I'm cold." Dark bangs shaking under the cap of her jacket. "I wish we had a fire. Emily shrugged. "Mommy said we would set the whole neighborhood on fire. We have a blanket. " A small camouflage blanket was sitting on the ground outside the tent. Emily picked it up and they huddled together underneath it. Their breath reflected in the porch light. Emily giggled. "A ...

Christmas 1968 (Blogophilia 43.6)

It was an unusually warm Christmas Eve at my Uncle Archie's house.  My family had driven to Savannah from Orlando with a car load of "Santa" gifts. I was 10, and had pretty much figured Santa for a ruse, but I really didn't want to let go of the fantasy.  It took away from my parents fighting again and my Dad had lost his job.  There wasn't a partridge in the pear tree for us, just ravens in the live oaks along the dock. The launch of Apollo 8 was on the morning we left, so we delayed our start to see it. The cartoons that touted and mocked the inventions of the future were about to come true.  All the scoffing about lunar travel and it’s impossibility silenced for all time.   Our house was 40 miles west of the launch pad and the schoolyard at the end of the street made viewing launches easy. We could see the glint off the fantastical machine as the craft vectored away from shore.  When the dot made 15 degrees over t...

Bottom of the Barrell

Hey, Heidy and Howdy! It’s a bright, beautiful morning here on WOFT, Old Fart’s Radio.   I’m Harry Handy, your randy dandy radio host.   Have you had your Metamucil today?   Here, we spin songs so old; they really should be science experiments.   Moldy, goldy and straight from the bottom of the remainder bin at the record store, just like my audience.   Somebody asked me if I knew Ben Gay.   Knew him?   I watched him being born. Yeah, that was scraping the bottom of the barrel.      We welcome a new affiliate here to our ancient tunes network, the ladies of the Group Blogging Experience.   And are they experienced!   I understand we have a couple actual Woodstock veterans in the group.   That was a long time and many substances ago.   They have run the gamut of friends, others, children and grandchildren.   In honor of those folks, I have some special tunes planned. Like this one. ...
