Up, Up and Away (Blogophilia 42.12)

Wouldn’t you like to ride in my beautiful balloooooon?
Emily sang the song again as she got ready for bed. Grandma always played it when she was her house. They would dance around the fireplace and sing along with the record. She kept dancing in the car when Mommy picked her up and now as she put on her pajamas. They had pictures of balloons on them, too. It seemed like such fun, climbing into a big basket and floating over the ground. Tomorrow was Christmas. Daddy had asked her what she wanted and she said she wanted live at Grandma’s house. Why? So she could sing the balloon song over and over again. It was better than listening to Mommy trying to get Charlie quiet. He would grab at her necklace or hair and pull. That wasn’t all. Every time Emily wanted to cuddle with them on the sofa, he would poop or do something else gross. One time they were at the doctor’s office and he peed right in the lady’s face. Laughing, the doctor told Emilyall boys do that.
She wondered when the pictures they took would be ready. Mommy said the picture in her necklace needed to be updated now there were four of them. Everyone got dressed up and they went to the mall. Charlie was in a onesie with a tie that matched Daddy’s, while she had on the Christmas tree jumper and tights. Daddy sure looked good in his suit. Mommy kissed him and said she wanted to eat him up. Emily wanted to hide. It wasn’t so bad when they got mushy at home, but when they were outside she wanted to hide. Must be a grownup thing, she thought, to be mushy everywhere. Emily thought a moment. It was better than them fighting like they did sometimes.
The picture place was downstairs in a corner. There were chairs and a wall mirror where you could check how you looked. While they were waiting, she looked at the pictures on the wall. There were lots of ladies in stiff white dresses with a lot of frilly lace. They looked like princesses from fairy tales. Mommy said they were wedding dresses. Emily asked her if she had ever worn one. Mommy said no, Daddy and her didn’t need anything fancy. It was enough they were together. The lady taking pictures smiled and said they were both so cute. Charlie managed to get through it without crying or spitting up.
She said her prayers and crawled under the covers. What would be her Chirstmas Dream? She could feel herself being lifted into a basket as she drifted off.
Up, up and away.
