Last Chance Harvey-Part 19

Big Guy showed her a movie one time on the tug, The Sting. He tried to fuck her while she watched, but she was captivated. She would stay up for hours watching Hooker and Gordoff juking and jiving to stay alive. The story was exaggerated, of course. But the schemes she had been in had never been completely straightforward either. You kept the poker face and decided whether to bluff or fold.
Brooklyn was a dream now. Can’t draw attention. Blending into the background was what she did the best and now she just looked like some dazed housewife trying to find her way. Mama had been a good teacher, scamming her boarders and pimping me out for dope. Not an ideal for the self-esteem, but it taught flexibility.
Stopping outside the entrance to the Sheriff’s office, she played with the necklace hanging from the mirror. The costume peering back was satisfying. A biker chick who was Cinderella in reverse. The faded bruises looked good, enough to be plausible. The thrift store dress had a couple of loose seams, rose tattoo peeking out. Bra and panties were a bit worn, in case she had to be booked in.
The only worry was fingerprints. They’ll be taken, whether they’ll be run for warrants is a risk she was willing to take. Warrants. Hadn’t had to think about them in a while. Which alias would pop up? Harriet? Adrienne? Corrine? The last one brought a smile. Poor Harvey. Top notch scammer, weak human being, and... decent in bed. Too bad he ceased upon midnight in such a messy way. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy. Cold? Maybe, a little. But sentimentality gets you killed.
They hadn’t wanted to sink the boat, but between the Goons in Florida and Feds in Atlanta, there really wasn’t a choice. Harvey’s original idea was a simple bait and switch. The mark was an older guy in Dawsonville with a big drydock. Get him to store the thing until the heat died down, then slip in and move it somewhere. But word came the seizure guys were already on the way, so they switched to scamming the insurance company.
They staged a big fight as the distraction. It was his best performance. Him taking the rolled-up rug on board was genius. It was her idea to use the skeleton in case someone ever came across the wreck. They spent the rest of the night moving the cash and valuables to a hidden compartment in the truck. After everyone went to bed, they slipped out.
They picked up a ski boat kept for emergencies. After dropping him back off at Waterworld, she rode up to the meeting point in the cove. He got there an hour later. It didn’t take long to batten everything down. She pressed the detonator and made love watching it go down, celebrating the pyrrhic victory. It was glorious.
Coming back wasn’t planned, but Biker guy was too easy of a mark. Putting on the necklace, she looked at the dragonfly and smiled. They had found it in a Cuban shop in Miami and she had said it was cute. It had become her spirit animal, living life darting from plant, to water and back to plant. It was all she knew how do.
It was time for her close up.

  1. For your picture guesses, you have "mating" down twice. That is a lot of dedication shown to...
Your girl here is dedicated, and determined, and dastardly, too... Odds are that she will get away with all she has done to this point. However, one more errant move, and her luck will run out.

    That is just my guess.
