Music for the Geritol Generation (Blogophilia 11.9)

Hey, Heidy and Howdy. I'm back. Harry Handy, the randy, dandy, didlio DJ of your dreams. And this is WOFT, Old Farts Radio on the air! Moldy golden oldies for the Geritol Generation, spinning the memories of our misspent youth.

2016. Can you believe we've made that long? When we were kids, we said "Don't Trust Anyone Over 30!" Now, we survivors are more than double that. Anyway, it has been a tough year for us old farts, with a lot of our more well known smells having the bells tolled for them. David Bowie...Glenn Frey...Prince...And the rest of our heroes look like this:

Yeah, we are all a bunch of old, decrepit hippies at heart, syncing our pacemakers and eating our bran based granola to a little more out of life. (For the record, That is Mr. Wavy Gravy, seated on the left, Dr. John Hook in the middle and Mr. Arlo Guthrie on the right. All right and true messenger of the cause. Picture (c) 2016 Arlo Guthrie ).

But somehow, Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger keep looking the same and Keith Richards is a Highlander. Must be all that sympathy from the devil's contract, but I digress (as I always do).

We were raised to by our parents to think that silence was golden.

And that any acting out would give us a reputation.

Not that there is anything wrong with that. After all, with all the free love and Woodstock, we became the people are parents warned us about.

When we really wanted to be Pirates chasing after Sailor Moon.

But like Jimmy above said, It's hard do an occupation when your occupations' just not around.

But I don't feel like I've drowned.

And I'm already uptown.

But that is neither here or there. But we have come to the end of another exciting clip. And as always...

  1. This was the answer to the question you asked a day or so ago about my fave of your characters - I was spacing on the name then, but there is a humor that always hits close to home. Probably because I'm an old fart too

    1. It's funny. In all of the Harry Handy bits, he's never played Harry Chapin's WOLD. (It's too close to home). I kind of miss hanging around a radio studio. There is a great energy being around the mikes.

    2. The Tremeloes recording of "Silence is Golden" was a number one release for the band, 49 years ago, and subsequently charted well in America. They took the best track ever by The Four Seasons, and beat them, hands down. As for your other videos, I will get to them eventually. For now, "Silence is Golden" is on repeat play, just as often has happened since I bought that 45 rpm record when it was new. I will be 60 in a few weeks, but not while I am listening to that recording.

  2. Kind of makes me part of that crowd. I working on three times that age :D My walker is in constant use and more parts keep getting replaced every year or so. I doubt anyone remembers my radio days any more (It's been at least 30 years ago.). But, oh the memories. Glad you posted this. Gave a smile.

    1. In reality, I'm at the tail end of the era. But I have had the pleasure of seeing all three of the gentlemen above in concert (mostly at the Great Southeast Music Hall or the Agora in Atlanta). I used to practice my mike skills with a cassette recorder.

  3. Haha!!! I just love your Harry Handy DJ.... And this resonates. It's been a terrible year so far for musical legends. Not sure if I'll ever get over Bowie.

And though we are aging right along with them, it does make you wonder about McCartney, Jagger and Richards..... Deal with the devil or secret elixir? Brilliant blog! :)

    1. Yeah, if you listened to our parents, silence from all that new fangled rock stuff was golden. With Macca, I think he has a plastic surgeon on retainer.

  4. Since I am a Looney Tune, I never age. Lucky me hehe! (Ah, clever way to sneak in the Johnny Depp quote.) 8 points, Earthling!

  5. Yes I hate to see such Iconic inspirations leaving the Musical Realm...and my favorite old time Musician is and will always be Robert Plant, I am so relieved he is like Sir Paul and Mick and hanging in there. I don't know what I would do without his inspiration on this planet, (Oh look at me digressing now, it must be contagious) Loved your write here Christopher, it makes one appreciate the Music, past, present and hopefully future!! :) ~Christine W.

  7. Damn. Why does the Reaper take all our iconic artists and leave the Kartrashians and all those stupid reality show celebs?

    1. Good question. I've already deleted three snarky answers to that. But, hey I'm the DJ, not the Program Director.
