Eyes (GBE2 94)

Eyes

Looking

Out from a

Paneled background

Sad and hopeful that

An escape can be found

From the evil world he sees

In a home that looks wonderful

Deceiving all that see the gilt cover

He leaves tonight with his girlfriend

Disappearing into the mist

Leaving Mother speechless

Grasping an image

Of hopelessness

Drunkenness

Empty

House

  1. This is haunting, brilliantly written, and I love it.

  2. I like this very much, looks are very much deceiving. Especially in homes.

    1. True.

The inspiration for this was a runaway girl in Atlanta a few years ago. She was twelve when she disappeared, but the picture used for the news was from a couple of years earlier. The eyes still haunt me today.

BTW, the girl was recovered a few months later in reasonably good shape. She had met a guy (about 18) on MySpace who actually did take pretty good care of her.
